The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is coming soon. This article introduces the relevant venues in two parts.
The Beijing Winter Olympics will have 3 competition areas: Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou; this article first introduces the 7 venues in Beijing. National Aquatics Center (Water Cube), National Stadium (Bird's Nest), Wukesong Sports Center, Capital Gymnasium, National Speed Skating Stadium, Shougang Ski Jump, National Stadium. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics are planned to be held at the Beijing National Stadium.
National Aquatics Center
In 2019, the National Aquatics Center of Double Olympic Stadium created 4 Winter Olympics standard curling tracks for the first time through “water-ice conversion”, so that the stadium can switch freely between “water function” and “ice function”. At the same time, it has the ability to carry out water and ice sports and various large-scale activities.
National Sport Stadium
Located in the southern part of the central area of Beijing Olympic Park, the National Stadium is the main venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. It covers an area of 20.4 hectares, with a construction area of 258,000 square meters, and can accommodate 91,000 spectators. According to the plan, the National Stadium will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Wukesong Sports Center
Wukesong Sports Center can realize the conversion of the two game modes of ice hockey and basketball within 6 hours. It is the first venue in China to hold both basketball and ice hockey professional sports events on the same venue. Designed and constructed according to ultra-low energy building standards, it will be used as an ice hockey training hall during the game.
Built in 1968, it was the first artificial indoor ice rink in China, which hosted the 2008 Beijing Olympic volleyball competition. During the Beijing Winter Olympics, short track speed skating and figure skating competitions will be undertaken. This is the first completed renovation and expansion competition venue project for the Beijing Winter Olympics: the appearance is "repaired as old", continuing the classics.
National Speed Skating Stadium
The National Speed Skating Hall, also known as the "Ice Ribbon", is the only newly-built ice competition venue for this competition, and together with the "Bird's Nest" and the "Water Cube", it forms the iconic building complex of the "Double Olympic" city. It is also the first speed skating venue in the history of the Winter Olympics to use carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, and will undertake speed skating competitions.
Shougang Ski Jump
The Shougang Ski Jump will take on the snowboard and free ski jump events during the Beijing Winter Olympics. The design concept is derived from the traditional flying shape in the Dunhuang murals in China, which looks like a smart "crystal shoe" from the side. Large-scale outdoor activities such as concerts and press conferences can also be held in the end of the track in the future.
The National Stadium is the competition venue for the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games. After transformation, it will host part of the Winter Olympics men’s and women’s ice hockey competitions and the Paralympic Paralympic ice hockey competitions. In addition to ice hockey, the venues can also carry out figure skating and short track speed skating.
